A few questions for the experts
Hello there,
I recently purchased my first gun, a Ruger MkIII. I purchased a few rounds to go with it (100) but used up all of them in an afternoon of target practice. I just picked up 550 more .22 rounds. Do you think it would be wise to stockpile a few more boxes of 550 rounds? Is there a particular brand of .22 rimfire rounds that you like best? I got Federal, but Winchester and Remmington rounds were only $1.5 more expensive. I am also thinking about purchasing a rifle. I don't have very much money, so I am thinking it might be better if I just stayed with stockpiling a few more boxes of .22 for my pistol. If I was to purchase a rifle I was looking at T/C Encore. Any ideas or comments to help this newbie out will be much appreciated. |

Re: A few questions for the experts
The best 22 round is the one that wont jam in your gun. Lots off 22's are very picky about the type of ammo being fired.. I happen to have 2 of them:
Ruger 10/22 Browning Buckmark 22 pistol. Both have issues with specific brands of ammo. Jams or feed problems can happen if you pick the wrong ammo. Case in point: Went to the range today to sight in my AR, and took the 10/22 for some cheaper plinking. The winchester Xpert 22 I bought from wally world were TERRIBLE, had at least 10 jams, this on a brand new rifle (first time shooting). So if you find a ammo type that agrees with your 22, stick to it, or at least dont buy 5 boxes of brand X only to find out your gun doesnt like them. |

I do not pretend to be an expert on anything btw, well except sitting on the computer surfing GIM.

Re: A few questions for the experts
I would look at the CZ 452 ZKM series rifles, or even the ubiquitous Ruger 10-22.
All my 22s like CCI Mini-Mag solid or HP...Rugers especially. And YES stockpile more ammo. I have heard of some problems with the MkIII magazine disconnect interfering with trigger pull--fixable, I'm sure. For more info on rimfires, check out this website:http://rimfirecentral.com/forums/ |
Re: A few questions for the experts
My old 10/22 must be a lot looser.....it will shoot anything I put in it.
ABC: I would avoid the T/C Encore simply because of the single shot feature, even though you can interchange all those barrels. I would buy a 10/22 in stainless to go with the Ruger you have. Then I'd get a pump shotgun, 12ga, like a Mossberg 590 or a Remington 870 for close quarter defense. Then I'd get a decent larger caliber rifle.....you'll get ALL kinds of recomendations here, but if you're new to firearms, I'd personally go with a good bolt action rifle like a Remington 700 in something like 30.06, or whatever is a popular hunting caliber where you live versus a "spray and pray" type assault rifle. Once you learn to handle a larger caliber with some competence, then consider a high magazine capacity assault type rifle. Then, ammo,ammo,ammo.....and consider getting into basic reloading. |

I've been a loyal fan of CCI Mini Mags and Stingers for over 30 years.
Just can't seem to switch now? 2,000 rds of stock should get you started. |

Thanks for the responses!
I am looking at the Ruger 10/22 and I must admit that it would go well with my MkIII. It even is the right price (around $300). Tomorrow I will give the ammo I purchased a test run to see how the MkIII likes it. |

That being said, I don't think I will get it because A) I don't really want to spend the money and B) It is impractical in self-defense and even hunting. |

The Ruger 10/22 is the AR15 of rimfire rifles. There is no end to the modifications, options, customizations, etc for these rifles. |
Re: A few questions for the experts
I'm in the process of purchasing my first rifle. It's a Stag Arms AR-15. I have already purchased 1,000 rds of .223 ammo for about $460 and I know I will burn through that easily in a day of breaking in the new gun. I will probably want to purchase at least another case of a thousand just to keep on hand. I think it would be generally wise to keep as much ammo on hand as you can comfortably afford and store. Prices are only going to continue upward. .22 cal and .22 magnum rounds are probably the most affordable when compared to the alternatives. They also take up considerably less space. One thing to remember is, before you buy any ammo in bulk, find out which brand(s) work best for your firearm. This is especially true for guns sized in .22. They can be very picky about the ammo you use. The only way you will find out is by trial and error. Happy shooting

Re: A few questions for the experts
Every .22 will react to ammo differently. Find the one or two that don't jam your gun, and buy a whole flippin' lot of that!!
My Rugers prefer the plated to the lead nose, though the Mark I does pretty well with the Aguila SSS. There is no such thing as too much .22. |
Re: A few questions for the experts
I think the AR-7 is a good semi automatic 22 rifle for bug out because it is light, and breaks down easily with no tools to go in a backpack if it needs to be out of sight for part of the journey.
It isn't fancy, but it is very practical. |

I picked up my Stag 2TL this last week and took it to the range for the first time today. I am TOTALLY pleased. I couldn't be happier, very tight gun. Having a left hand rifle is excellent. The only thing I will change long term is maybe get some trigger work done to lighten the trigger pull a little. |
Re: A few questions for the experts
I would also go with the 10/22
This is one of the most common and reliable .22 rifles available. Magazines are everywhere and there is no limit to the available options and customizations. Last thing you want is a rifle you can't buy magazines for or are very expensive. |

I started a thread asking for opinions on different brands of ARs. Quite a few people recommended Stag, so that's what I decided on. I can't wait to take it to an outdoor range. Of course, I still have to get the order completed first. :smokin: One step at a time, I guess. |

I purchased it through Talon Arms, because they are local here in Houston. Rob is a really nice guy, you will pay MSRP though. So far I have added a Tango Down Vertical Grip (highly recommended) And also a SPOT scope from Mounting Solutions. It is a decent red dot for $160. It will do until I save enough for an aimpoint. Next rifle will be the Varmiter. It will have the bipod and and a nice scope. |

I wish there was a "Mag-Pul" for the factory mags, though.
